How well is your business really doing?

When I ask business owners this question, the common answer I usually get is: ‘We’re doing OK’, or ‘It’s good’ – and this can range from ‘I’m struggling’, to ‘My business is kicking it out of the park’.

Benchmarking - how well is your business really doing?

Consider This…

When you’re thinking about how your business is doing, consider these questions:

  • Do you know what the numbers on your balance sheet really mean for your business?
  • Do those numbers add up to stabilising or growing your business?
  • Are you making best use of the capital available?
  • Do you have the resources you need to get where you want to go? (Have you defined where you’re going?)
  • Do you know what’s possible in your marketplace?

All these can be key to really understanding your business. So where can you find answers? One great tool I want to focus on in this post – which is useful for considering your business in relation to your marketplace – is benchmarking.

What Is Benchmarking?

Are you one of the many business owners who’s largely kicking a ball round in the valley of mist? You might even keep extensive numbers about your business, but do you have a defined league table of how you’re doing compared to others in your industry?

Benchmarking is all about knowing where you are so you can plan how to move forward. It gives you a comparison against your peers to help you define your business and take action where you need to. Of course, if you’re at the top already, this could include having the champagne glasses chinking to celebrate being ahead of the game!

How Could Benchmarking Benefit My Business?

It could have a major impact, as:

  • It can change the way you see your business, when you understand how well you’re doing compared with others in your industry.
  • It could give you peace of mind, by taking some of the mist away and helping you create a clear action plan to develop and enhance your business.
